Latest reports suggest that Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev, though being members of Uzbekistan’s first family, are not believed to wield much power in the country and their sphere of influence is negligible compared to that of Lola's sister Gulnara Karimova and the rest of the political elite. According to sources close to the presidential family, Lola and Timur left the country in the mid-2000s because of pressure from Lola's influential sister Gulnara Karimova. At present the Tillyaev couple mostly reside abroad and visit Tashkent only a few times a year due to their business interests as well as some charity projects, such as supporting orphanages and charitable institutions for children with disabilities. Despite leaving Uzbekistan, Lola's husband Timur Tillyaev managed to maintain control over some of his business interests in the country. Latest reports suggest that he is one of the main shareholders of the Abu Sahiy company, which controls the Abu Sahiy market in Tashkent. Lola holds the post of Uzbekistan's ambassador to UNESCO. Gulnara and Lola reportedly fell out many years ago, and circles close to the sisters speak of "considerable differences" in the two sisters’ world-outlook as well as values. Lola supports two charitable organizations, which help orphaned children and children with disabilities. The National Centre for the Social Adaptation of Children, according to her website and Facebook page, provides free-of-charge medical assistance to children with special needs and is fitted out with advanced equipment, including Solostep and Lokomat treadmills, designed to help children with musculoskeletal disorders. Unlike her sister, Lola maintains a relatively low media profile, and appears in local media on rare occasions in connection with charitable organizations she is in charge of. It is believed that she has never had any political aspirations. Lola was thrust into the limelight when she brought a libel suit against a French newspaper two years ago. Timur Tillyaev and Lola have three children: daughters Mariya and Safia, and son Umar.
